What to Do When Your Garage Door Doesn’t Open!

Are you frustrated with a malfunctioning garage door? We know how it feels! When you have a garage door that suddenly would not budge, it is always best to call in a specialist than repair it yourself. There are, however, a few things that you can do to troubleshoot the common problems that could be preventing your door from working correctly.

Make sure the opener is plugged in

A very common error homeowners make is forgetting to push the “on” switch of their garage door opener. First, check that the power is plugged into an outlet. The motor may seem to be working, but it may not be receiving electricity. This can cause problems with the motor itself and will prevent it from getting power from the outlet. As much as possible, it is ideal that your garage door opener is plugged into a GFCI protected outlet. This will keep things safe from electrical malfunctions.

Check your home’s breaker panel

If your garage door does not open, check your home’s breaker panel to ensure that the circuit breaker that powers the garage opener is on. A small electrical surge might have tripped it, and a damaged circuit can also cause the same problem. Next, check the breaker that powers your garage door opener (it should be labeled, by the way). If it is flipped off, flip it back on. Resetting the breaker should get your automated garage door opener working again.

Has the trolley been disconnected?

Visually check if your trolley is properly connected. There should be no obstructions on the steering column. If your trolley is the type with a cord that needs to be plugged into the outlet for it to work, make sure the cord has no signs of wear and tear. If the plug shows any loose wiring, you might need to replace it with a new one. If so, put in a new one following your owner’s manual for instructions.

Inspect if the photo eye is misaligned

The photo-eyes are the safety sensors on garage doors. They are sensitive, and if they are not getting a clear image of whatever is in their path, they will stop the garage door from working. Using a cloth, clean the photo eye of dirt and dust that may be obstructing the sensor. Remove any large obstructions from the path of the photo eye’s LED laser beam. Make sure as well that both photo eyes are aligned. Finally, check the wiring attached to the eye for any damage.

Check the remote control

When your garage door does not open, a broken remote or a lack of signals could be the issue. First, take a look at the remote control to see if there is something physically wrong with it. It may need fresh batteries. If changing the batteries does not work, you can try and change your frequency by reprogramming your remote. Check the user manual for your remote control for reprogramming instructions.
